How to choose a method

AI Remove works best when the subject stands apart from the background. The model downloads on first use and runs in your browser. Review fine edges before downloading.

For a plain background, try Auto Detect. For a green screen or another known color, use Color Key and adjust Tolerance. Cancel discards an AI result, although processing may finish in the background.

Three modes: AI (a local IMG.LY model, about 40 MB downloaded on first AI use), Auto Detect and Color Key (pixel-color matching, not AI). Accepts PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF and HEIC; file size is capped by plan (5 MB on free).

Auto Detect samples the four corners and removes pixels close to that color. It works best when the backdrop is one fairly even color; shadows and gradients may need a higher tolerance or can leave edges behind.

Green screen with Color Key

Color Key #00ff00 → Tolerance raised from 32 to 60 → Download PNG

Color Key removes only the color you pick. Hair edges and reflected green can stay semi-transparent or leave a fringe, so check the preview at full size before you download.

The AI model is about 40 MB and loads from Toolblip the first time you use AI mode. Later visits can reuse the browser cache. Cancel discards the pending result but may not stop the computation.

Quick answers for Image Background Remover

How does Auto Detect know what the background is?
It samples the pixel colors at all four corners of the image, averages them into one background color, then flood-fills outward from those corners removing any pixel within your tolerance of that color.
When should I use Color Key instead?
Color Key removes a specific color you choose with the color picker, such as green screen footage, rather than guessing the background from the corners.
What does the Tolerance slider control?
It sets how close a pixel's color has to be to the detected or chosen background color to get made transparent, so raising it removes more color variation like shadows or gradients.
How is AI mode different from color matching?
AI mode uses a local IMG.LY segmentation model that Toolblip serves itself, and it runs in your browser. Auto Detect and Color Key use pixel-color matching instead and are not AI. Model downloads or runtime setup can fail. Cancel discards the result but may not stop computation.
How big is the AI model download?
About 40 MB, fetched from Toolblip the first time you use AI mode. Later visits can reuse the browser cache.
Is my image uploaded?
No. Processing happens in your browser. The only downloads are the AI model and the example image when you press Example.
What file types and sizes are accepted?
PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF, and HEIC. Upload size is capped by plan, 5 MB on the free tier, and a file over the cap is blocked with a notice. The result downloads as a PNG.
