Google confirmed in 2024 that Core Web Vitals are confirmed ranking signals — not just "signals to consider." If your site has poor CWV scores, you're bleeding organic traffic to faster competitors.

The Three Metrics

1. LCP — Largest Contentful Paint

What it measures: How fast the largest visible element loads.

Good: Under 2.5 seconds Needs improvement: 2.5s – 4s Poor: Over 4s

The "largest element" is usually a hero image, large text block, or video poster.

Common causes of poor LCP:

  • Slow server response times
  • Render-blocking JavaScript
  • Large unoptimized images
  • CSS that delays text rendering

2. INP — Interaction to Next Paint

What it measures: How fast your page responds to user interactions.

Replaced FID in 2024. INP measures the latency of all interactions during a page visit, not just the first.

Good: Under 200ms Needs improvement: 200ms – 500ms Poor: Over 500ms

Common causes:

  • Long JavaScript tasks blocking the main thread
  • Unoptimized event handlers
  • Too much DOM manipulation on interaction

3. CLS — Cumulative Layout Shift

What it measures: How much the page layout shifts unexpectedly during loading.

Good: Under 0.1 Needs improvement: 0.1 – 0.25 Poor: Over 0.25

Common causes:

  • Images without explicit width and height
  • Late-loading fonts (FOIT/FOUT)
  • Dynamically injected content above existing content
  • Ads that resize the page

Chrome extension — shows CWV in real-time as you browse.

Search Console

Performance report → discover issues across your whole site.

The Real-World Priority

Most sites will see the biggest gains from three fixes:

  1. Image dimensions — add width and height to every <img> tag
  2. Font preload<link rel="preload" as="font" href="/font.woff2">
  3. JavaScript defer<script defer src="..."> instead of blocking <script> in <head>

These three alone can move LCP from "poor" to "good" on most sites.

Target Numbers for 2026

Google sets the bar higher each year. Current targets:
