Color Format Converter: HEX, RGB, HSL — and When Each Format Is Useful
Designers and developers work with colors in multiple formats. Learn the differences between HEX, RGB, HSL, and HSV, when to use each one, and how automatic conversion helps you work faster.
If you've ever copied a HEX color and then needed it as RGB for CSS, you've probably done the conversion manually or Googled "hex to rgb." It's a friction that slows you down every time it happens.
The better approach: understand the formats so deeply that you know which one to reach for in any situation.
HEX Color Format
HEX colors are the web's native format. They're compact, ubiquitous, and immediately recognizable to developers.
#RRGGBB (6 hex digits)
#RGB (3 hex digits — shorthand)
Examples:
#ff5733— bright orange-red#000000— black#ffffff— white#3b82f6— Tailwind blue-500
The 3-digit shorthand (#RGB) expands to 6 digits by doubling each digit: #f09 → #ff0099.
HEX is great when:
- You're defining a color once in CSS
- You're working with Tailwind or similar utility frameworks (they use HEX internally)
- You want the most compact representation
HEX is less great when:
- You need to adjust a color (make it lighter, more saturated) — HEX math is painful
- You're communicating with designers who think in HSL or RGB
RGB Format
RGB (Red, Green, Blue) defines a color by how much of each primary light to mix:
rgb(255, 87, 51) — integers 0–255
rgba(255, 87, 51, 0.5) — with alpha channel
Every color monitor works this way — pixels are tiny lights combining red, green, and blue at different intensities.
RGB is intuitive when:
- You're generating colors programmatically (you often have R, G, B values from an API)
- You're adjusting individual channels (increase the red, decrease the blue)
- You're working with image processing (most image formats store data as RGB)
RGB is less intuitive when:
- You want to make a color "lighter" or "more vivid" — you have to guess at channel values
- You're designing (HSL is almost always better for human thinking)
HSL Format
HSL (Hue, Saturation, Lightness) was designed for human comprehension:
hsl(200, 90%, 55%) — saturated sky blue
hsla(200, 90%, 55%, 0.8) — with alpha
Hue — the color's position on the wheel (0–360°). 0° = red, 120° = green, 240° = blue.
Saturation — how vivid the color is (0% = gray, 100% = full color).
Lightness — how light or dark (0% = black, 50% = normal, 100% = white).
HSL is the best format for designing because:
hsl(200, 90%, 55%)— I want a vivid, bright blue. I know exactly what to change.- Need it lighter? Increase lightness. Need it grayer? Decrease saturation.
- Complementary color? Add 180° to the hue.
HSV/HSB Format
HSV (also called HSB) is similar to HSL but with a different definition of "lightness":
hsva(200, 90%, 95%, 1) — very light blue
In HSV, the third component is "brightness" (value) — the maximum intensity of the color. In HSL, lightness is the midpoint between black and white, which makes HSL better for predicting perceived lightness.
Most design tools (Figma, Sketch, Photoshop's color picker) use HSV internally.
Converting Between Formats
HEX ↔ RGB
HEX to RGB: split into R, G, B pairs and convert from base-16 to base-10:
#ff5733 → RGB(255, 87, 51)
FF = 255, 57 = 87, 33 = 51
RGB to HEX: convert each channel to 2-digit hex and concatenate:
RGB(255, 87, 51) → #ff5733
255 → FF, 87 → 57, 51 → 33
RGB ↔ HSL
This requires actual math:

The good news: you don't need to memorize this. Just use a color converter.
The Alpha Channel
Both RGB and HSL have alpha variants (RGBA, HSLA) for semi-transparent colors. In CSS:
/* 50% transparent blue */
background: rgba(59, 130, 246, 0.5);
background: hsla(217, 91%, 53%, 0.5);
HEX with alpha is newer and less supported:
/* 50% transparent blue in HEX (CSS Color Level 4) */
background: #3b82f680;
The 8-digit HEX format appends alpha as two more hex digits (00 = fully transparent, FF = fully opaque). Not supported in older browsers.
When to Use Each Format

Once you settle on a format, use CSS custom properties to make changes maintainable:
