If you've ever seen a string like SGVsbG8gV29ybGQ= and wondered what on earth it means — that's Base64. It's one of those technologies that every developer uses regularly but few can explain confidently. Let's fix that.
What Is Base64?
Base64 is a way of representing binary data as ASCII text. It converts any input — images, files, binary files — into a string made of 64 safe-to-transmit characters (A-Z, a-z, 0-9, +, /, and = for padding).
The key insight: Base64 is not encryption. It's an encoding scheme, which means anyone can reverse it. If you Base64-encode a password, it is not secure. Base64 is about transport safety, not security.
Why Base64 Exists
The original problem: email was designed to send text, but people wanted to send images, attachments, and binary files. MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) solved this by converting binary to text using Base64.
The same problem exists in JSON APIs, XML configuration files, and HTTP headers — none of which were designed for raw binary data. Base64 lets you smuggle binary through text-only channels.
How It Works
The algorithm takes 3 bytes at a time (24 bits) and splits them into four 6-bit groups. Each group maps to one of 64 characters:
Input: "Hi" (H=72=01001000, i=105=01101001)
Bytes: 01001000 01101001
Groups: 010010 000110 100100 (padded with zeros)
Base64: S G k
"Hi" → SGk=
The = at the end is padding — it tells the decoder where the last group ends.
When to Use Base64
1. Data URLs in CSS/HTML
The most common use on the web. Embed small images directly in CSS or HTML:

Instead of loading logo.png, the browser decodes the Base64 string and renders the image inline. Saves HTTP requests for tiny images, but increases HTML size. Use for icons and small UI assets, not large photos.
2. Sending Binary Data in JSON APIs
If your API needs to transmit a small file or binary blob, Base64 is the standard approach:

Most API clients and languages have built-in Base64 encoding/decoding, so it's universally interoperable.
3. API Keys and Tokens

- Large files — Base64 increases size by ~33%, making it inefficient for anything over a few hundred kilobytes
- Structured data that needs querying — Base64-encoded JSON can't be indexed or searched in a database
Common Mistakes
1. Forgetting to Specify the Encoding
When decoding a string, you need to know what character encoding was used to generate it. UTF-8 and ASCII produce different results:

2. Treating Base64 as a String
Base64-encoded data should be treated as binary. Always use a library function to decode — don't try to parse it manually.
3. Not Handling Padding
The = characters at the end of a Base64 string are not optional. SGk= decodes correctly; SGk may not. Some lenient decoders accept unpadded input, but it's not guaranteed.
