Developers usually search for a way to format SQL queries online for readability after they paste a single-line query from a log, a support ticket, or a failing test. The database can parse that mess. A human cannot. Before you review the join logic or explain why a report is wrong, you need the query split into readable clauses.

What readable SQL actually means

Readable SQL is not about making a query look fancy. It is about making the structure visible.

A good formatter should put major clauses on separate lines, indent nested blocks, align joins well enough to scan, and keep comments intact. SELECT, FROM, WHERE, GROUP BY, and ORDER BY should be easy to find. CTEs and subqueries should look nested instead of flattened into a wall of text.

Here is a typical query from a log file:

select u.id,u.email,o.total from users u left join orders o on o.user_id=u.id where u.created_at>'2026-01-01' and o.status in ('paid','shipped') order by o.total desc limit 50;

After formatting:

SELECT
  u.id,
  u.email,
  o.total
FROM users u
LEFT JOIN orders o
  ON o.user_id = u.id
WHERE u.created_at > '2026-01-01'
  AND o.status IN ('paid', 'shipped')
ORDER BY o.total DESC
LIMIT 50;

The query did not change. The difference is that you can now see the selected columns, the join, the filters, and the sort order without mentally rebuilding the syntax.

When an online formatter beats an IDE

IDE formatters are useful when you are already inside DataGrip, DBeaver, VS Code, or a database console. They are overkill when the query came from Slack or a bug report.

That is where an online SQL formatter is fastest. You can clean up a snippet without creating a connection profile, installing an extension, or saving a temporary file. For teams with locked-down laptops, a browser formatter also avoids the approval cycle that comes with new desktop software.

Privacy still matters. If a query includes production table names, sample IDs, or schema details, use a tool that runs client-side. You can check this yourself: open DevTools, switch to the Network tab, paste a query, and click format. If no request leaves the page, the formatting is happening locally in JavaScript.

Formatting rules that help code review

The exact style matters less than consistency, but a few rules make SQL easier to review.

Put each selected column on its own line when the list is longer than two or three fields. Keep join conditions directly under the join they belong to. Indent CTE bodies so the boundary between one CTE and the next is obvious. Keep CASE branches on separate lines. Preserve comments, especially when they explain a business rule that is not visible from the table names.

For example, this compact analytics query is technically valid, but painful to review:

with monthly as (select date_trunc('month',created_at) as m,user_id,count(*) as c from events where event_type='purchase' group by 1,2),ranked as (select m,user_id,c,row_number() over (partition by m order by c desc) as rn from monthly) select m,user_id,c from ranked where rn<=10 order by m desc,c desc;

Formatted, the CTEs and window function are much easier to check:

Now the reviewer can focus on the logic: whether the grouping is right, whether ROW_NUMBER() should be RANK(), and whether the top-ten cutoff belongs before or after another filter.

Formatting is not validation

A formatter fixes layout. It does not prove the query is correct or fast.

After formatting, still run the query against safe test data, check the EXPLAIN plan for expensive scans, and confirm placeholders such as $1, ?, or :name are bound the way your application expects. If a formatter changes those placeholders, do not trust it.

The useful workflow is simple: format first, then debug. Clean indentation makes mistakes visible earlier, especially in joins, CTE chains, and long WHERE clauses.
